Rongotea and Districts Lions Honored for 18 Years of Christmas Cheer

The Rongotea and Districts Lions Club has been spreading holiday joy for nearly two decades, starting with hot chips and evolving into a full-blown barbecue extravaganza. What began as a simple act of kindness for the Manawatū Cancer Kids Christmas Party has blossomed into a beloved tradition that brings smiles to the faces of children and families every year.

In 2009, the Lions Club expanded their efforts, firing up the grill to provide a hearty meal for attendees. By 2015, the club’s 40-plus members had taken charge of fundraising, catering, and entertainment for the entire event. This dedication and commitment to service have not gone unnoticed.

In recognition of their outstanding contributions, the Rongotea and Districts Lions Club has been honored with the Lions’ national “Kindness Matters Service Award” and has secured the top Club Service Award for the 2023/24 term. These prestigious accolades are bestowed upon Lions and Leo clubs that demonstrate exceptional service projects aligned with Lions’ global causes.

Club president Nick Walkley expressed his pride in the club’s achievements, highlighting the international certificate of recognition received from Lions Clubs International president Patti Hill. The annual Christmas party, which hosts approximately 140 children and their families, remains a cornerstone of the club’s service project calendar.

Under the leadership of club service and youth director Phil Lightbourne, the Christmas Party represents a collaborative effort involving all 45 members, as well as partnerships with the local branch of the Child Cancer Foundation and area businesses. Together, they create a memorable experience filled with outdoor and indoor entertainment, delicious meals, and quality Christmas gifts distributed by Santa himself.

Reflecting on the impact of their efforts, Lightbourne remarked on the joy and gratitude expressed by the children and their families, describing it as both humbling and inspiring. The Rongotea and Districts Lions Club continues to embody the spirit of kindness and generosity, enriching the lives of those in their community and beyond.
